Have a look at the "end switches". These should be located somewhere near the motor or gearbox. I'd expect there to be these switches which should stop the motor when the end position (open / close) has been reached. Maybe a switch is defect or the mechanics which should actuate the switch.

Yep, the end switches are called 'limit switches' in the States.
Something in the gearbox is supposed to physically contact the lever on the 'limit switch' when it reaches the end of travel (full opened or full closed curtains).
Something might have broken off that makes contact with the limit switch, or the
lever that contacts the switch may be bent, not making full contact, or the positioning
of the limit contacts may have become misaligned.
You can't let the motor try to keep turning when it should be stopped, or you'll wind-up
'burning-out' the motor, which will make it useless.
If the assembly is some kind of sealed unit, you'll have problems. I don't know your assembly,
and if you're in the UK, they might call the actuator something else.
If you're mechanically inclined and can open the assembly, you may find the problem.
In any event, you may have to have it adjusted by someone who services them, or
replaced.
Good Luck.
