Shure Microphone repair

A customer brought in a beta 52 microphone, and its malfunction is
realy weird. There is not much signal coming out of the mic - but I
opened it up and tapped on the capsule casing and I could hear the
tapping just fine - which leads me to believe that there is something
else happening in there.... I guess that this is a passive mic since
it does not require any phantom power - and there are no broken
connections. He can get it refurbished for $85 - but perhaps someone
has a less expensive idea that I might try first? Thanks! - Tim

Hi Tim...

It's indeed dynamic, but is there a possibility that your
customer doesn't know it's intended application? It's
sensitivity will be incredibly low; it's designed to
be put inside or right beside a kick drum :)

Read for yourself; here...

Take care.

Yeah - he is aware of the application - and I have one myself that is
functioning and we A/B'd them - mine is sending out signal....his
sends out something, but the gain is way off. Maybe there is a
transformer in there - I will contact Shure. Thanks - Tim

I assume your familiar with pro audio equipment.
That's a balanced low impedance mike. That means the signal is across
pins 2 and 3 with pin one just being a shield. Did you plug it in to a
preamp that's set up for balanced low mikes to test it?

Its a dynamic mike, so no phantom power is required.
Either the mike element is good or its not. Really no
electronics in-between to fail. As i recall, that model had
a relatively low impedance from the norm.

You can order replacement mike element from SHure if your a shure
dealer. Its probably chapter just to send it back to shure.

There *is* a transformer in there, but I've never seen one go bad. I assume
that you've checked the windscreen assembly for obstructions.... The only
thing I can imagine taking out the transformer would be some kind of phantom
power accident...not likely, IMHO. Easy to check, however. Shure usually
supplies wiring diagrams with their mikes.

More likely, there's physical damage or obstruction of some kind in the
capsule assembly.
