Sharp VCR OSD

I have an older model Sharp VCR, however I do not have the original
remote. The remote I have (Radio Shack Universal) will operate the
VCR, but I cannot turn the On Screen Display off. It is always on,
and none of the buttons on the remote will turn it off. Is there any
way to manually turn the OSD off without using the remote? Any
suggestions? I looked on the web for the original remote for this VCR
and found it in one place for $60.00! (yea, I know I could just get a
new VCR!)
