Back in May there was a thread in this group regarding work done at
Sandia National Laboratories on lamps made from a tungsten photonic
crystal. The link to the press release published by Sandia is given
below.

The "violation of Plank's law" part of the claim was particularly
interesting and disturbing, since neither the press release nor the
articles published by the authors in reputable scientific journals
gave enough information to support the claim re: Plank's Law.

Last week I attended the 10th International Symposium on the Science
and Technology of Light Sources in Toulouse. www.ls-symposium.org. One
of the papers presented at the symposium discussed the Sandia work.

Paper L017, "Modified thermal emission from tungsten photonic
crystals" by J.G. Flemming and S. -Y. Lin of Sandia National
Laboratories was presented by Dr. Flemming. In summary, the
conclusion was that: "there is no evidence of emission in excess of
Plank's Law." The original claim was "due to an error in temperature
determination of the tungsten lattice."

The two-page abstract of this paper may be published on the LS:10 Web
site, but is not there as I write this note. If I do obtain a PDF copy
of the paper I will post it on me Web site or otherwise make it
available to interested parties.
