    I have searched groups.google and have seen info saying both yes and no.. i
    pulled out an ADT panel and on it sats WA20ADT-1 and the can says Safewatch
    pro. I am assuming it is a safewatch pro 2000? Can this be reprogramming to
    be monitored? What would the specs be bassed off of? A Vista 20?

    Yes, it can be reprogrammed. Just follow the specs on the Vista20SE

    Here are a few things to consider. I know a little about ADT so,

    1. If you had a 5 year contract with ADT you probably don't own the
    equipment. ADT usually wants a customer to be locked in to a 5 year contract
    to help underwrite the subsidy they afforded you when they did your install
    for "low down"

    2. Your panel is an Ademco Vista 20 and can be programmed by anyone and
    monitored by anyone.

    3. If you WERE under contract with ADT you are STILL under contract and are
    NOT now month to month. ADT contracts renew by default for another 1 year
    term after the initial contract expires. To get out of your contract you
    need to cancel in writing 30 days before the expiration of your current
    contract, or pay the early termination fee, typically 90% of the balance of
    the current contract.
    4. If you own your panel and related equipment, ADT will remove any
    installer lock-out in place upon your request. They have to.

    5. If you're initial contract with ADT is over and you threaten to take your
    business elsewhere, ADT will bend over backwards to keep your business,
    including free upgrades, free equipment, free addtional sensors, free
    inspection of your system, free replacement back-up battery,free this and
    that, but of course you will be asked to sign a new multi-year contract.
    Timing is everything here. If you have already missed your window to cancel
    your contract ADT will be alot less inclined to help out, until the next
    window is in view.

    6. If you have not experienced horrible service issues or have some other
    peeve that would prevent you from signing another contract, why not let ADT
    stroke you again. At least it will be done right and if it's not done right,
    get on the phone and stay on the phone until it is right. ADT lives and dies
    by the old adage that the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

    7. If you have experienced issues with service, this what is known as
    leverage. ADT has tons of people who sit behind a desk and answer telephones
    for a living. The trick is to get the number of someone ( I'm thinking
    branch manager) who is at the same phone every day and call the hell out of
    them about your lack of proper service. It doesn't matter how absurd your
    complaint may be, just keep beating it like a coked up monkey on a snare
    drum.That person will make shit happen for you, even to the point of getting
    you a brand new system just so they don't ever have to talk to you ever
    again.

    Only commercial contracts are 5 years. Residential contracts are
    either two or three. ADT currently sells almost all residential
    systems outright using MBNA as a finiancing source to provide
    "zero-down" systems. Currently, most commercial systems are sold
    outright as well. This is a major shift from the lease (ADSC) model
    that ADT had used for years, where systems were provided at or below
    cost, and a recurring leasing fee was built into the monitoring
    payments.

    The ADT Safewatch panel does report in Contact ID format, so it can be
    monitored by almost anyone. However, the ADT version of Compass
    programming software is different, so other central stations cannot
    remotely program the system. Also, the system should be locked out to
    prevent unauthorized tampering.
    The 90% is only true of commercial contracts cancelled within the
    contract term. Once the inital term of the contract has expired, ADT
    has recovered all of their investment in the original installation,
    assuming that the system is leased. They would be hard-pressed to
    prove a loss if you cancelled the contract after the inital term was
    complete. However, the contract does automatically renew. This is a
    common feature of all security monitoring contracts and is there to
    ensure that service is not provided without a contract to limit the
    liability of the monitoring company.
    Expect to pay for this service.
    Generally, anytime a customer calls ADT with a legitimate concern,
    what you describe above will happen. ADT's value to Tyco shareholders
    is cash flow generated by recurring service charges. They have
    reocognized the customer attrition issue as their largest problem and
    have pressed upon their management that customer retention is to be
    top priority.
    ADT doesn't employ branch managers. ADT offices are divided into
    Districts, which encompass one or more ADT branches called "towns."
    Within each District, there is a Sales and Installation Manager and a
    Service Manager. Districts are combined into Groups. There is a
    Group General Manager, who is responsible for the P&L of a number of
    ADT branch offices. These people report to Regional VP's. The best
    way to resolve a complaint is to call the customer monitoring center
    and have them file a customer dispute. Then whoever is responsible
    for the area of the business that caused the dispute must resolve it
    quickly.
