RTV for heat sink?

I've always used the heat sink compund and hardware but was wondering what
the deal is on using RTV.

I know there's an electronics grade RTV but has anyone used a high
temperature automotive RTV that is readily available at the hardware....like
the gasket seal stuff?

Thanks

It's a little more complicated than that. The blue RTV gasket goop in the auto
shop is not particularly thermally conductive, and is NOT recommended for
electronics use. However, there are RTV Silicones that are made to be
thermally conductive adhesives, for example:

There are much better performing thermally conductive adhesives available from
Loctite

Also, their application engineering people are great.

Good luck

Thanks Chris....

I'll look for the MG stuff....I think MCM carries their products.

We use Loctite 3873:

The glass beads act as shims to ensure that the thickness of the
adhesive is exactly right.
