I currently have a DSC PC1555 Alarm system (supposedly similar to the
power832 alarm) with a DSC LCD-5501Z keypad. I recently bought a DSC
LCD-5500Z keypad and would like to replace the 5501Z. Do I need to
remove the AC power to the control panel and disconnect the
batterybackup prior to disconnecting the old keyboard and replacing
with new keyboard?? Will I lose the alarm setting (Pin numbers, phone
number to central station etc) by replacing with a new keypad and
removing power to the control panel?? I would appreciate any help, I
don't want to spend hours with the alarm monitoring company
reconfiguring the system If I don't have to. Thanks in advance for any
help.

If you know that keypad can be used with that panel then yes disconnect
power and battery then hook up keypad. You will not loose programmed info.

The 5500Z keypad is "custom English" display. This means you'll need access
to installer level programming to properly set up the keypad. You'll also
have to reset module supervision because the old fixed English LCD may have
a different address from the custom English one you're going to be using.

*Always* power down the system before adding any devices.

Finally, you'll have to reset the system clock when you power up to "clear"
the trouble display.

I am almost 100% positive on both the 832's and the 632's that the chime and
the time clock get reset. Regardless, its pretty easy to fix both.

It is also a good idea to make it
a habit to touch an earth ground point before you touch anything on the
electronics. This applies to all electronics equipment -- not just alarms.
I always do this and every once in a while I get a sharp jolt, especially
after traversing a carpeted floor in the winter. It's far better to
discharge the static into a ground than across some CMOS device on your
alarm panel. :^)

Excellent point, Robert.

One additional word of caution, Chuck. If you're planning on doing this
work yourself, be careful you're not violating the terms of any service
agreement that might be in place for your particular installation. If in
doubt, ask your company first!
