Okay

1) where would I find a parts list for a sharp video cassette recorder
model vc-h85x. I've tried google without response

2) Whilst I know it went in the power supply and I can identify (find) a
couple of blackened caps (which is why I need the parts list - no see um
any values) , what else is likely to have gone? I am tempted to try
replacing the obviously damaged bits, but I don't have an scope to check
signals, etc.

Or more importantly, would I be best to kiss it good bye and just buy a
new one?

by the time you get a manual, pay for the parts (and more importantly
the freight on both these items that is likely to be around $15 or so
on its own if they have to come from separate suppliers) and mess
around with it, then run the risk that there might be more problems -
(Which is a risk with switchmode power supplies - which is what the
VCR probably has) you could have bought another unit and be sitting
back watching / taping your favourite shows ;)Harvey norman currently is selling an $99 model as part of their labor
day weekend sale. I'd be surprised (these days) if this unit didnt
have a 12 month replacement warranty also.Unless this Sharp you have is some particularly high end or special
model that has necessary features that arent on the newer consumer
ones, I would be ditching it fast and buying another.I would imagine too that it won't be long before all domestic VCRs
become obsolete and are replaced with fully digital (hard drive
storage) units anyway. These are already being advertised for retail
sale - you might even want to look into one of these if you can spend
the $$.

I have the VC-H84 and have had trouble with the power supply squeeling
and only running for a short time. From doing some searching these
Sharp VC's have problems with the electrolytics in the power supply.
Advice to me was to replace all the electrolytics you can in the PS,
especially the smaller ones which I did and that solved it.

Capcitors in the power supply -- very common.

While you are inside, replace belts kit and mode switch. You may also need
new pinch roller, depending on how worn yours is.

Very good and reliable VCRs!
