If you are servicing a JVC HR-D970U and are wondering why the front panel
controls will not respond, make sure that the jog/shuttle is connected to the
control circuit.

This particular tip applies to many JVC and JVC OEMed VCRs. If you are having
a picture problem that looks like a quarter or half or more of the screen is
snow during tape playback, and sometimes the size of the snow on the screen
varies every time you load a different tape, then replace capacitor C6 on the
head drum motor, which is a surface mount part rated at 3.3 microfarads at 50
volts DC. When this capacitor goes bad, it can send bad switchpoint feedback
to the servo control circuit. Replacing this capacitor will allow the drum
motor to send accurate switchpoint feedback, allowing the VCR to properly scan
the tape to reproduce the video. - Reinhart
