I now have first hand experience as to just how quiet running they really
are. They are remodeling the house next to mine so that an old couple can
move in and this morning I got up and walked to the bathroom. I got up by
the window and heard the faint sound of an engine running so I moved the
blinds to see where it was coming from and about 10 feet from the window was
the generator. If I get a chance I will find out the model number etc. but
it isn't an inverter model I know that much.

Honda has what they call the "super quiet line". They also have a feature
called Eco-throttle, on almost all generators. The Eco-throttle, will slow
the speed of the engine when there is no load. So, even one of their nosier
generators might not make much noise if there is no load and it is just
idling along. Several other manufacturers do this as well, not only to
reduce noise, but also to reduce fuel consumption.
