Question - how to hook up telephone through stereo?

Hello
I have a question that I'm desperately searching an answer for. I am
wondering if it is possible (I'm pretty sure it is) to hook up the
telephone through my stereo (or even the computer). I have a group
meeting to host at my place, and would like to have a friend who will
be calling in via phone participate. But I want to avoid having to use
speakerphone, since speakerphone is always crappy sounding/distorted,
etc.

I know in the past i messed around a bit with wires and what not, and
was able to run my phone through my little tabletop tape/cd stereo. The
sound was awesome.

I'd like to do this again, and would like some on advice on what i
might need to buy to make it happen. Or if its possible to hook the
phone up through the computer, so the audio runs through my computer
speakers (and I guess then I could hook up some mics to send the audio
out).... woudl that work?

Any advice on the best/easiest way I can do this to achieve the best
possible sound is much appreciated. Thanks!!

Get one of those suction recording adaptors from Radio Shack.

What is best is a device called a phone patch. It's usually used to connect
a transmitter and receiver to the phone line so the person on the distant
station can both listen and talk via the connection. It will work
adequately through the sound card. Try eBay for phone patch.

The reason it "speakerphone is always crappy sounding/distorted,
etc." is the Noise cancelling circuit that allows the telephone to operate in a "Duplex Mode" ie. allows one to Talk and Listen simultaniously.
It works fine when there is very little delay in the Microphone signal,
but becomes progressively worse as the Mic and Speaker signals becomes
more and more widely separated.

If you kept the Microphone, Speaker, and Talker/Listener in close
proximity, using the Speakerphone, most of the distortions would disappear.

Without the Noise cancelling Network you would be plagued with Feed-back
from the Speakers !

There is Normally a small controlled amount of "Talk-back" in the
Telephone Signal to give the impression of "Presensce" to the signal, ie
a small amount of deliberate Feed-back to make make life difficult for
simple designers like most of us. Hence the need for the Speakerphone
circuits.

that (through computer) can be done more easily. if you have a voice capable
modem all you need is the right software.

Bye.
