question about chip replacements.

I have a few schematics that use a op/amp chip for the base of a preamp. Can I just match the pin outs to an 12ax7 tube and replace the chip? What would happen would it just not work? Or will I seriously mess things up?

No, you can't.
The 12AX7 is a miniature double triode tube, not an operational amplifier.
