PWM AC Motor Speed Controller

    i need help in designing and building an AC motor speed controller for 240VAC to control the speed of the motor. but i'm not sure on how to start designing the cirucit. Can anyone help me with the circuit.

    what if i change from 240V to 48V?
    just to control the light bulb or motor..

    There are somwhat low cost IGBT controllers.

    An important issue is what kind of motor it is (brush or induction) and how powerful it is. It's not much harder to do a 240V circuit than a 48V one.
