protecting chips from static?

What is the best for protecting chips against static discharge? I've
bought the socket to protect pins, should I somehow modify the socket
so that chip is safe from static, like shortening all the pins?

Just buy some of that anti-static foam rubber that they sell for
storing IC's. Basically, its just small sheets of carbonised styrofoam
or foam rubber. You can get it just about anywhere that sells IC's.
Alternately, you can buy anti-static IC tubes. Both are relatively
inexpensive.
