powering the pic

  1. hello, i just started programming PICs so i need to create DIY experimenting
    enviroment. :) i read that pics are mostly powered up (if not by batter) by
    stabilizator consisting of 7805... but i was wondering, for my experimenting
    (mostly with pic and led display) is it possible to connect it directy to
    usb (i guess it's 5V)...
    or maybe to connect it directly to ATX power supply, i have one spare, just
    need to figure out how to power it on without motherboard...

    Yes, an old PC Power supply would be fine for powering pics, and any other
    electronics experimenting that calls for good regulation at 5v and 12v. Turn
    it on by grounding pin 14, some units like to have a load to keep them
    happy, you can use an old hard drive or see here
