I want to build a poor-mans-laptop briefcase computer.

can I just apply a 12v battery to a standard ATX desktop supply
at some point in the circuit?

or is there a Texas Instrument DC-DC product for that so I can get a
sample?

guides or forums on the subject would help too.

No. They convert 120 VAC to several hundred volts DC before feeding
it into the switching power supply.

Look for a tiny board called the PW200M. It's meant for Epia ITX boards,
but it probably works on ATX too. If you really want a small computer,
you'd do well to check out ITX stuff anyway.

I've run a Via Epia M12000 II from an 80 watt line wart, and a sealed lead
acid battery.
