I have a Master Pro 3 power attic vent and an old Butler Ventilating.
They both have a thermostat and something else attached to the motor.

Does anybody know what this thing is and how to test it ?
There is some unintelligible writing on the Butler, nothing I can see
    on the Master Pro

I am thinking maybe the motor is good and this "thing" is shot

    Thanks

Quite probably the "things" are starting capacitors. Unless you have a
capacitor tester capable of ESR measurements, you cannot accurately test these
devices. Better to determine the correct value and replace.
