  1. I'm looking at buying a Devilbiss GB5000 portable generator. Seller
says says it need a new stator for about $250. Does any place
repair/rewind stators for small generators or is this strictly a remove
    and replace part?

He says rotor and other parts are good (who knows ???)

What would cause the stator to fail in the first place ?

Some have DIY stators but you may be opening up a can of worms here.

Typically arcing, extreme vibration, or exposure to severe
environmental conditions sufficient to break down the
    insulation.

Often, heat breaks down the insulation on the magnet wire.

I'd be cautious about buying this unit.

The stator is probably fine, the Devilbiss generator I repaired for someone
had a bad capacitor, the thing was a poorly made piece of junk though.
