Power Supply Cookbook, second edition, Marty Brown (Newnes, 2001) is older, but quite readable. It is not entirely about SMPS, but most of it is (155 of 176 pages). There are several useful appendices as well. It covers the basics well.

    Newnes is an Elsevier company.

I would use the ltspice simulator from linear.com and run some of the example circuits.
tho "demystifying smps" is a good un.

    switchingpowermagazine is also good.
microchip application notes are also good on smps, also some of the Phillips app notes on smps...find by google
