So I want to know how one would choose a transistor for this classic Class A amp circuit given my specs. Also, what would be the power output if this was connected to a standard 8 ohm speaker?

Vcc 24V
Ic 50mA
hfe 50

I looked over at digikey and after a few filters applied I ended up with a list of 400+ different transistors.

Your transistor appears to have got lost!
The maximum current taken by the transistor will be limited to about 0.1A peak. that is +/- 0.05A peak or 35mA rms. Putting all of this into an 8 ohm speaker (I*I*R) gives a power of about 10mW.

What formula are you using to figure rms value for current? This is where I get lost so please excuse my ignorance.

edit: wikipedia answered my own question, a/sqrt(2) or 1.41
