PIC600 Volt Regulator question

Does anyone know anything about the PIC600 regulator? I'm trying to
understand a circuit I saw and it's used as a 5 volt regulator. Below is a
link to the datasheet that I found, but there doesn't seem to be enough
information on how to regulate the output to 5volts. There is only one
example circuit where they use a 2.5ohm resistor on the output as a load and
it shows 5 volts from the regulator, outside of that, I don't understand it.
The max output states 60 volts I believe so it looks like there is a way to
change the output voltage.

Do I not have the correct datasheet?

this "hybrid" is used as the "pass element" (or control element) of a
switching regulator. it is not a complete regulator in an of itself.

usually a pulse width modulated square wave is applied to the "drive"
terminal. (see page 7 fig 1)

a 3 terminal regulators output voltage (referenced to common) can be
increased by referencing the "common" point of the device to a desired
voltage above the common point of the supply.

the output voltage of this switched mode regulator will depend upon the "on
time".

lets say the regulator is 100% turned on. the output voltage will be the
supply voltage minus the CE voltage drop (lets say 2 volts). if the load
draws 1 amp only 2 watts are wasted as heat
now turn the element off. zero current flows all the supply voltage drops
accross it now thre is no heat produced in the element.

next step it to locate the application notes that are referred to in the
data sheet.

these are also referred to as "switched mode" regulators.
