I'm looking to get started using PIC microcontrollers and was looking for a
good forum for discussing the basics. Questions like, given that I want to
run an PIC18 microcontroller at 40 MHz, for the external clock, would it be
better to use a ceramic resonator or a crystal (presumably with the required
    parallel resistor and two capacitors).

So, is this the right newsgroup? Are there better online forums for this

  2. Try
  3. Most of the PIC 18 chips, _will not_ run at 40MHz, with an external
crystal or resonator (they will with a complete external oscillator). The
maximum internal oscillator frequency is usually 25Mhz, but the chips have
a *4 PLL, and you run the oscillator at 10Mhz, with the PLL enabled,to
have the chip run at 40MHz.
A crystal will be more accurate in general, the resonator will be cheaper.
Microchip have a fairly good forum.
Particular software development tools/kits, will have their own sites.

    Best Wishes

A good place to start is:
Which also provide several usefull links including the ones below.
    Another wellknown site:
    Official info on:
Which includes a link to the forum mentioned by Richard Henry.
