I have a DCC900 digital cassette deck. It plays analogue tapes fine but
suddenly stopped reading digital tapes cleanly. I don't think it is a
serious fault because it will occasionally sense a tape and play a bit
but it sufferes dropouts.

It played well when it was put away. I dragged it out just to play with
it a bit (gone retro :) ). So the time sitting idle 6-7 years seems to
be a factor perhaps.

Does anyone know the likely cause of this. Or even a list of common faults?

Are there service docs available on the 'net?

Are you sure it's not the tapes ?

I've got a DCC too and the tapes self-erase after a few years.

No, not sure the tapes are good. I will try making a new recording on an
unused tape. I am still inclined to think the tape transport mechanism
is in need of some attention. The analogue playback on closer listening
is "muddy". One channel is lower level a bit. Quite a bit actually.
