Hello,
I was troubleshooting a problem with my PTV which I thought was in the
deflection circuit somewhere but after trying to use a different component
of my home theater system I'm thinking the problem is in a different area.
The problem I'm having is that when I'm watching cable tv which is thru
coaxial connection the picture seems is too wide and a little bowed at the
top and bottom of the screen. When I try to use the other video inputs such
as the rca jacks or the s-video it is scrambled. So now I'm thinking that
the problem is in the small signal board which is the board the has all of
the connections for the tv. Does anyone have any ideas.

The bowing is from something defective in the scan circuits, or in the pin
amp area. If the input video does not work, this can be from something
defective in the external input video area.

The basic checks are to verify the performance of the power supply, and its
distribution to the related areas of the fault condition. The next basic
step is to look for any broken connections, cold solder joints, loose
connectors, or any type of visible damage or defects. Proper troubleshooting
for the video path, is by tracing the signal path with a scope to find where
the loss is.

As for the pin error, this can be found by evaluation of the waveforms and
diagnostics of the pin amp and scan amp sections.

These types of repairs are not something you can do at home yourself, unless
properly trained, have the proper service information for your set, and have
the tools to do the work.

I would suggest to give the set out for proper service. There are many
safety issues involved when servicing TV sets, and monitors.
