So I blew some more IRG4PC50UD's. Digikey has them for ass-all price, and
Allied is out of stock, so I ordered the suspiciously cheap but similar part
IRG4PC50KD.

Reading through the data sheets simultaneously, it looks like the KD is
slightly worse performing, perhaps as if the UDs were selected for lower
losses. Does this sound about right? Anyone have experience with this
family?

Looks about right to me. The cheaper 'KD part specs 10% higher
saturation voltage, higher gate charge requirements, slower
switching, and ~50% higher switching losses.
