    Hello --

Is it worth it to fix this problem?

The metal-bottomed cassette carrier no longer positions itself just behind
and at the bottom of the opening in which a tape is inserted. Instead, it
remains elevated above and at a distance from the opening.

Thanks for any suggestions of the parts and cost involved, and/or whether or
    not to discard it.

  2. Sounds like it's not opening the cassette lid as the tape moves in.

The lid is stuck in the "up" position.

    L Mehl:
Most likely a mechanism timing problem..... fairly inexpensive to have a
shop re-time, clean or replace mode select switch, and maybe a gear??
At the very least you should TAKE it to a repair shop to obtain a repair
cost estimate so you can make an intelligent repair decision with facts.
A tech really needs to see it first hand otherwise it is all guesses.

For an older unit, it might be worth the aggravation of some shop time
if you think it will yield a few more years service, otherwise this
would be a smart time to consider a new one, while VHS decks are still
    somewhat worth their junk-store prices.

These things are made to fail, and when they start screwing up in
weird ways, you don't pay a tech $80 to (maybe) fix it, you do
yourself a favor and TOSS it.

I mean, I'm like most people ... I'm not wasteful, I care about my
equipment, I treat it respectfully and I'll attempt to repair anything
myself first, but I don't reason with consumer trash from asia. I
usually curse the reason we no longer have a choice in this fucking
country, and go buy another one.
