I have a Panasonic microwave, model NN-5454B (white one that says
"Welcome to word prompting" when you turn it on. Yesterday all the
buttons except "stop/reset" and "start" stopped working. Tried
resetting the power - still no luck. Can't make it cook, obviously,
because I can't tell it how long or how hot to cook.

It seems like a little thing, as if the keyboard on my PC needed a
service. But how should I fix it? The thing is nine years old, but
it's still a good microwave, and it seems like a waste to just replace
it on a little thing like this.

    while to dry out.
Another failure mode for these critters is a stuck pad. This is mostly
caused by poking the pad with a fork or spoon. This fault can usually be
seen or felt by a careful examination.

Sadly the age of the oven would seem to indicate that a replacement would be
