    Hi,

I have a Panasonic microwave, model NN-5454B (white one that says
"Welcome to word prompting" when you turn it on. Yesterday all the
buttons except "stop/reset" and "start" stopped working. Tried
resetting the power - still no luck. Can't make it cook, obviously,
because I can't tell it how long or how hot to cook.

It seems like a little thing, as if the keyboard on my PC needed a
service. But how should I fix it? The thing is nine years old, but
it's still a good microwave, and it seems like a waste to just replace
it on a little thing like this.

You may possibly trace this to the keypad having been sprayed with Windex
and then cleaned. Does the keypads in a treat.

As a guess, beacause all the buttons died at once, bar 2,
it seems unlikely that that contact points are to blame. That would
involve serious coincidence, unless something like water or an
exploding egg found it's way there.

    Good Luck.

That can work if it did not get too wet. The usual trouble is that the
cleaner wicks up into the pad and into the flex connector. Can take quite a
    while to dry out.
Another failure mode for these critters is a stuck pad. This is mostly
caused by poking the pad with a fork or spoon. This fault can usually be
seen or felt by a careful examination.

Sadly the age of the oven would seem to indicate that a replacement would be
    indicated.

    Bill.
