Panasonic KX-TG8421 battery issue

Hello,

I have the aforementioned cordless phone and the following problem.
After I charge its batteries then it is working for about 6-7 hours and then all of a sudden
it shuts down. When I turn it on it shows that the batteries are discharged and it shuts down again.
I have tried new batteries but the same problem appears. What could be the problem?

1) maybe the charger isn't working properly and not fully charging the batteries?
2) maybe there is some other fault in the phone that is draining the batteries quickly?

just a couple of thoughts

Thanks for the answer Dave. I have also charged the batteries using an external charger but still the same problem.
What could drain the batteries so quickly that is my guess too.
