Hi Group:

I just aquired the remains of a Gillette PH-32C. 3.5 kw, single phase power
plant. The alternator appears complete more or less but the gas engine has
had many parts removed. I have been unable to locate any ID marks on what's
still there.
I've emailed Gillette but have not heard anything back yet. Anyone have any
ideas how I can ID the engine?
Thanks

Well, if you are able to take a digital picture of the engine, or what
remains of it, you are welcome to e-mail me the picture, and I will
have a shot at identifying it. Put "What Engine?" in the header, so I
don't inadvertently delete it as SPAM.

This ought to be a 5 to 7 HP 4 stroke engine. If the pole pieces of
the ignition coil mount close to the outside diameter of the flywheel,
then it is probably a Briggs and Stratton, which is the only engine
familiar to me which has that configuration.

Some idea of the age of the unit and country of origin would help,
too.

It's a tapered shaft genny. Just buy a replacement engine - oh say 8 hp or
so - with a tapered shaft and off you go.

Aparently, it has a Briggs and Stratton engine. I've partialy disassembled
it and it looks like it has never been run. I'm going to scout around to see
if I can locate one for parts.
I've posted some pictures at:

The armature has a couple of diodes on it but no slip rings

Definitely B&S, but there are a lot of parts missing, unless you pulled them
yourself. Flywheel, ignition systen, carburetor, intake manifold, governor
mechanism, crankcase breather tube. The pics of the cylinder head would
indicate the unit HAS been run and might have been under water. Either
there's a lot of rust or dirt in there that could take a while to remove
completely.

There may also be external components for the generator, such as capacitors
or resistors, that are also missing from under the end cap.

I had a DYNA/WINCO generator that looks very similar to the one you have.
Perhaps they bought out Gillette, or supplied generators to them.

In any event, a new engine would be helpful but I expect you'll also have
generator problems after that. By the time you get done, you'll have spent
several hundred dollars and might be better off just buying an entirely new
unit. Of course, this is something you need to figure out for yourself.
There will be a break-even point on repair vs replacement.

There is no shroud - which is where Brigss stamped serial number. Looks
like a 10 - ish HP briggs circa 1980 -ish Aluminum - but early

Briggs may not have many like - kind replacement parts - governor assembly
in particular. I know because I just rebuilt my baby last year - which is a
1978 cast.

Briggs has complete parts blow-up on their web site. You should be able to
find this engine by looking at them. Serial number probably staats with
23 - if a 10 HP. You can find all that stuff on their site.

Looks like a WINCO gen - parts still available. Should have serial on
armature - see you have namplate info.

Use the web - Google. You'll find what you need.

email be direct if you'd like to talk...
