entered British army language, if not more widely, as many other Hindi
and Urdu words did.

I've only seen that spelt 'Cinque'

How weird, I'd only seen it spelt "Cinq", but Google gives
overwhelming weight to "Cinque". Rather amusing to have
Anglicised the spelling of the original French. "Cinq" is still
valid, though.
