Hello,

I'm having my new Town-house pre-wired for a security system. I was planning on
installing the system myself after settlement to get more system for my dollar.

It is a 4 level TH, with a front door and garage and window on the first level.

The installer is going to wire 2 keypads on this level (near each exit) and all
the entrances and windows will be wired for contacts, as well as a few motion
detectors.

The second level has a deck, so the door to the deck will have a contact, and a
motion detector will be placed on this level as well.

The MBR (3rd level) will just be having a keypad. The 3rd and 4th levels are
pretty high off the ground, so I decided not to have any wires run there.

I'm looking for recommendations for a reliable control panel system that I can
install myself.

Any good dealers I should look towards or avoid?

I'd like to be able to purchase only the parts I need and not have to buy some
kit and not use some of the items (e.g. I want to use only pet immune PIR's and
not have to waste one included in a package)

Thanks for your suggestions.

-Mike

Why not do all the doors & windows? The cost will be negligable now. Maybe no one will climb up to a 3rd floor window to break in but maybe they will from above...or maybe you'll leave a window open when y ou go out of town for a week and you'll come home to a house full of snow, rain, or whatever, etc. Switches only cost a couple of bucks each...and the cost to run a few wires? - practically nothing compared to what it will cost to do later.

Kits can save you money sometimes.

Stick to name brands for your country - Ademco is easy to program and reliable - there are others too. As a DIYer you want something easy to program!

Remember...wiring is easy to do now while the walls are open...even if you think you'll never want a motion/smoke/glassbreak somewhere..you can always leave the wire buried for future use. Also, remember that someday you may sell your home and a partial system may NOT be a selling feature.

In addition to the points Crash Gordon makes, having all the openings wired
will help qualify you for extra discounts off of your insurance. Run an
extra 4 wire conductor to the keypad locations to help future proof the
house.
