The original NiMH batteries in my Panasonic shaver failed after only 6 months, and although they are very particular (AA with studs attached), it is now possible to replace them with standard AAs (was not true of earlier models). I swapped them out with Sanyo Eneloops which have the same capacity (2000 mAh) but are 50% heavier.
I have had similar low life issues in general with plain NiMH batteries, a problem solved by the eneloop series.
Thought this might be of interest to those with the same problem.
