Thanx a lot for the suggestions.
Actually, I am a total technical nincompoop. So would be really great
if i could get a more specific solution.
Let me give some more details of my system to clarify. The ring is
around 1 inch thick(in breadth). It has some other contraptions on
both sides(concentric rings) which will not allow anything to be
added. The pointer is made of plastic and cannot take anything heavy.
So I probably need some kind of strip which can be stuck onto the ring
(cannot wrap around it as it is flush with the mounting) and the
sensor would have to be light and small. And then of course..(uh oh)..
I want it cheap. I dont know if such a thing is possible or even
exists but would really really appreciate a few more pointers.
    Thanx
    Maddy

An optical encoder disk sounds like a possible add-on solution.
It can be a thin film, black and white reflective.
Maybe "stolen" from an optical encoder, and perhaps the rest of the
encoder used at the "pointer" location?
