Need opinion, TV repair worth it?

I have a 7 year old 32" Sony Trinitron TV that just took a dump. The TV
itself turns on, but the tube is obviously not getting power. There's
no image whatsoever, and there's no trademark "buzz" when first
powering it on.

Question: I can get a comparable TV for under $500 these days. Is it
going to be worth it to lug this thing down to a shop and hope they
don't try and rip me off, or should I just suck it up and go buy a new
one?

Thanks

Dana

You won't likely find a T.V. around as good quality as the one you
have. Possibly, you have the"typical" Sony power supply failure. As
long as the pix was fine....you really should get it fixed. From $ 120
- $140, to get it done right, depending on where you live,
& well worth it. These are great units. The repair isas
follows...usually that is. Dani.

Replace 2SC 4927 horizontal output, 2-2SC4834 switching transistors,
0.1 ohm fusible, VDR601, resoldere horizontal drive, replaced VDR 602,
& 603, checked R 647.
Replaced the.47 uf horizontal drive capacitor. Solder vertical ic.

I would try to have it fixed. I had one from 1998. Haven't seen
anything better since it died. There are plenty of non high def 32''
crt's out there for under $500. I put almost $150 in it before the
tech figured out the tube had an intermittent short in the tube. P.S.
if you do dump it and your a sony loyalist the new ones don't look as
good as the trinitrons did. We bought one and ended up returning it
for a JVC.

Chance

Talk to some local technicians. It could be as simple as a bad solder
connection or it may need parts. I always recommend having it checked out
before tossing it.

But, it is 7 years old. So you have to decide if you want to put money into
it or put the money into a new unit.

If you don't know if local shops are reputable or not try asking around.
Look for a shop that warranties their repair for at least 3 months. I
guarantee my repairs for a year. Some shops have 5 year warranties.

Ask for an estimate first and make sure they stick to it.
Good luck. Scott

dont trust ahywhere with fre estimates, its better to pay a few dollars
for one and have the tech take a proper look and make an informed
diagnosis. See the recent thread here on that subject!

Hey, just want to say thank you all for the quick responses!! The
consensus seems to be that it's worth taking to a shop first, so I'll
start asking around and making some calls to shops. I really appreciate
the feedback!

Dana

If the picture was good before it died, and the set is in good cosmetic
condition then it is almost undoubtably worth repairing.
