Need help with DoorKing component identification

I've got a DoorKing 1871-010 module with a burned resistor at location
R18 on the board. The resistor is burned bad enough that I can't tell
what it's value is. If anyone has one of these units and can look at
R18, that would be great.

R18 is located in the bottom left area of the board if you hold the 18
pin connector on the left and the 8 pin connector at bottom right.

Thanks.

Have you tried these guys?

Hi Justin,

You're probably going to find there's more than a bad resistor on the board.
Resistors don't burn out unless they get a lot of over current through them.
That current likely came from another failed component. A bad power supply can
cause it but that's only one of several possibilities.

Have you contacted DoorKing on this? They'll repair it for a reasonable fee.
If you don't have a relationship with DoorKing and you decide to have them fix
it anyway, contact me and I'll make the arrangements for you. Just pay whatever
they charge for the repair.

Thanks for the posts guys. Here's the situation. I know nothing of
this system. This circuit board was brought to me because the owner
DOESN'T want to pay for a new board. I only have this 1871-010 board,
so I can't diagnose any other part (power supply, etc.). I was going
to replace the resistor for them for $2 and send them on their way.
The owner pulled the board, the owner pointed out what they wanted me
to replace (the burnt resistor). I'm not troubleshooting, I'm just the
solder grunt. If it does or doesn't work is of no consequence to me.

So, any ideas on the value of R18?

I'd walk away from that customer as fast as my feet would carry me if I were
you. It's not worth the hassle for a few dollars, plus if he's that cheap he
might also be lawsuit-happy. That's not a good combination. Besides that, it's
highly unlikely that replacing the resistor will solve the problem that caused
it to burn out in the first place.

You should advise the owner that replacing the resistor will not fix the
problem that caused it to "burn up" in the first place. I do recall
Mirtone having a situation where they used the wrong wattage on a couple
of resistors in their single zone fire alarm panels years ago.
Replacing the units with 3/4 watt ones instead of 1/4 watt originally
supplied fixed the problem. This isn't the case with DoorKing though.

So, any ideas on the value of R18?

Ask your DoorKing distributor if you can have a quick "boo" at a board
to find out.

It seems like a lot of effort for $2.00

I certainly hope that the $2.00 figure he mentioned doesn't include
labour. Talk about giving away the shirt... Why not the pants and
underwear too?? :)

If the chip is fried forget it..otherwise DKS will repair the board for like
250 bucks.

You're assuming too much liability for only 2 bucks...walk away.

If the owner "knows" what's wrong, why isn't he replacing it himself? Anyone
that "knows" what he knows ought to be able to do a little soldering.

Sounds like you'd be buying him a new board after he says "all it needed is
a resistor...you fried it..you replace my board"

Thanks for all the advice, but I really just need someone to identify
the resistor value for me at RP18. If it doesn't fix it, it doesn't
fix it. Again, I'm just the solder monkey. The just want me to solder
in a new resistor. I'm not the one troubleshooting the circuit.

So, does anybody know what the resistor value is at RP18?

Thanks.

I doubt you'll find a schematic. Call Door King, maybe tech support will
tell you what it is. I looked at all my paperwork from DKS and nothing goes
down to schematic level. Sorry.
