Need help with a component.

Hi!

I have a problem identifying a component, Its from an ati R9 290X video cards fan control and it reads on it AFSV, I will add an image. If anyone can help me I would be thankful.20170921_134828.jpg

How does its junctions test in diode test mode ?
Also do you find that same part number used elsewhere on the board, so that you can compare junction readings, unless that one is testing as blatently bad.

If reading f u n n y there is even the the possibility that it could be a low power digital transistor with internal resistors associated with the base circuit.

Thanks for the reply.
The picture is from an identical card that is working, on the card that is bad this component is burnt ( short circuit, My fault).
Im not very good with electronics, but when I tested the good card the only way current passed was when connectiig the single top with + and and bottom right with -. Nothing with other options.

Sounds like it could be a MOSFET.

Can you tell us what you did to damage it. This may give us some additional information.

I presume it's a 2 wire fan and that it runs at variable speed on this card?

It's almost certainly a MOSFET. Can you use your multimeter to determine if the positive or negative lead of the fan is directly connected to the MOSFET. (My guess is the negative lead connects to the pin that's on the side with one pin).

What voltage is the fan? And what current does it draw?

My guess is that you may be able to replace this with a 2N7002 if the fan draws 100mA or less.

Ok, even more likely then. A small MOSFET can easily do the PWM signal required for them.

Replacing it with a 2N7002 seems reasonable.

What voltage is the fan? There is a chance that when the MOSFET shorted (common failure mode) this voltage was fed into the logic controlling the fan with potentially destructive effects.
