From what I've been able to glean from their documentation, it is really
a PWM output. They say that it is achieved by turning a FET switch on and
off "many times per second", but they don't specify if it starts at the
zero-cross or not. So, from what I understand it is a 5v PWM output.

You can check out their documentaton if you want, in case I missed
something, but I don't think they would be calling it a PWM output if it
wasn't.

Excellent!

See the diagram at

cut-n-paste if it wraps.

Since it's almost a sure thing that it's not sync'd to the line, you'd have
to just drive a non-polar chopper with it, if you're using AC, or just a
transistor, if you're controlling DC.

And, of course, if you're running off the line, you'd want to use
optoisolators.

In other words, you don't need an intermediate analog-voltage stage.

It'd be nice to see how much control you have over the software in these
things - syncing that PWM to the line would make the rest of the circuit
simplicity itself!

Have Fun!
