I have an AIWA bookshelf system, XR-MD100, with a cassette deck problem.

The machine is not detecting tape motion, therefore it "thinks" it is always
at the end of the cassette.

Symptoms:

Tape plays for a few seconds (tape counter does NOT advance.. stays at
0000).
- auto reverse -
Tape plays for a few seconds (tape counter still frozen at 0000)
Mechanism shuts off.

Trying to FF or RWD, mechanism engages, then immediately goes to STOP, as if
end-of-tape has been reached.

Suggestions? How is tape motion generally sensed by these things?

Thanks.

Maybe during playback the Take Up reel is not turning due to a worn or
glazed tire, faulty lubrication, slipping belt??
The motion sensor usually consists a belt that is driven off of the TU
reel..... it will turn a mechanical motion sensor, hall effect electrical
motion sensor and usually the tape counter. If the belt is slipping or the
mechanism is sluggish this can cause the symptom you described.

I once had a VCR with a similiar problem, turned out that a reflective
surface under the takeup wheel (part of the reel motion senson) was coated
with dirt. Cleaning it off solved the problem.

AIWA uses some of the Sony techniques and what happens in your case is that
there's a little take up wheel with a rubber tire that normally breaks or
rather, it breaks all the time...I've fixed a few of those using a small
"o-ring" and sanding the outer side for better gripping...It's a lot of work
and I don't know if you have the patience to disassemble the motor to get to
this little wheel. Good luck!
