Need a small time-delay mechanism. Any ideas?

Basically, I need something that's very small (as in can fit in a soda
bottle) and can delay the propagation of a circuit anywhere between
forty seconds and five minutes.

We have a motor connected in series, and we need the motor to start
running after a forty second time delay.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I heard something about a 555 chip?
But there can be no output current until that forty second time

 

and what happens to this after the timer expires?
