mouse zapper power supply...

Bought a mouse rat zapper of ebay, worked a treat, but instructions said
don't use rechargables. So of course I tried rechargables, and of course
they didn't work.

Why?

Could I use 5 X 1.2v rechargables,(rather than the recommended 4 X 1.5v) or
is it something to do with current draw that is needed to prime capacitors?
While I'm here, is this to do with internal resistance of batteries.....??

Thanks for any pointers....much appreciated.

Cheers

Funny, just yesterday the Wall Street Journal had an article about the
guy that invented rat zappers.
NiCads can put out mega current, so that's not the problem. It has
already occurred to you to use five rechargeables to get the voltage up
comparable to four alkalines, and I agree.
