You want to match the speed (RPM) and torque of the original motor.

What do you call 'Little'?
Small/older sewing machine motor are usually Universal motors and rev pretty high.
Also IF it is a Universal motor, you have to swap the field windings WRT the armature to reverse.

Hi Bob, yes the torque is the same & the RPM goes up to 7000 like the original does,

Hi M, the motor I need would have to go forward, stop then reverse, sorry I should have made this clearer,

If you have a S.M. motor there you need to state the motor technology, Perm. Magnet field or series wound field.

Try this......... top is original.....below that is alteration to wiring.....to the left of that is adaption of reversing switch. Advise getting qualified electrician to make changes.

The sewing machine motors I have seen are mains AC motors and I would not advise a novice to play with them for safety reasons.

A DC motor with permanent magnet field can be reversed without getting into the motor just by swapping the wires over. I have used motors from car radiator cooling fans with a 12V supply. Controlling the voltage to the motor will control its speed.
