I want to mount a motion sensor on a Nerf basketball hoop and wire it to a speaker, so whenever I make a basket it plays a sound.

Any ideas for what type of part I could use for the motion sensing?

An LED and photo resistor, mount both in tubes pointed directly at each other opposite each other across the rim of the net... The tube will block ambient light to the photo resistor and the other tube will create a focused beam of light directed at the photo resistor... When the beam is broken you can detect that with the resistors change of state...

Photo-Resistors (LDR's) aren't noted for their high speed. You may be better off with a Photo-Transistor.
