I tried doing a google with "convert upright refrigerator to chest" and
    basically found nothing.

After reading the articles on using an chest freezer as a refrigerator, I
thought maybe I could just use my little 4 cu ft refrigerator as a chest. I
know it wouldn't work if I just laid it on its back, but I thought maybe I
    could reposition the compressor.

Yes... I'm probably just posting to see my name pop up in the newsgroup ;-)
You are probably all gonna tell me it is easier and cheaper just to get a
real upright freezer and convert it like normal people do...

But, if by chance you have a link, I'll be happy to click on it!

Lots of fridges large and small still use external coils.
