  1. Yah...depends on what the installer had to drink for breakfast.

I'd say about 50% are decent and just need a complete check out.

I did one a month ago though that I had to replace every freekin contact (about 20) because the installer obviously ran out of beanies (or perhaps never intended to use them in the first place)...just twisted the connections together (in opposing directions) in hopes that they would not touch each other once he covered them with drywall spackle...DUH...like they'd never get damp or anything. Of course he left NO service loop...so I'm working with a magnifying glass and tweezers to make up new connections. SHEESH. The client watched me make repairs (shaking his head), now he wants me to take over his vacation house and his office...ADT!! Keep up the good work!! They're my best salespeople :))))))))))))))

    | Actually, I get a lot of ADT customers coming to me to take over their
    | systems. However, due to the nature of how the local ADT types install their
    | systems, I've found it is very important to check out the systems before
    | doing so.....I turn away about one in 10 systems as far too flaky an install
    | to take over....
    |
    | Nevertheless, I do a booming business in ADT takeovers these days. God bless
    | 'em....:)))

    | | Whats more astounding is when (rarely) I lose a sale to ADT (or any of dem
    | guys) AFTER having shown the potential buyer the math!...and helping them
    | read the tiny print on the back of ADTs contract. That's what really amazes
    | me.
    |
    | Once in a while I even get those customers back after a year or so of being
    | with adt.

    | | | Yes, I am constantly amazed how people can believe such a simple minded
    | | "come on" ! If they don't take the time to do the simple math involved in
    | a
    | | five year "free" alarm deal, to find out their REAL costs, can you imagine
    | | how poorly they must balance their own personal finances, or how many bad
    | | choices they must make when it comes to the really important financial
    | | decisions in their life.
    | |
    | | Astounding !!

    | | | | no it's not...it just puts things in perspective.-lots of clients think an

If you can only safely take over 50%, then clearly, the ADT guys in our area
aren't actually too bad in comparison. I run into only a few of those
terrible installs you describe below. Most are simply deficient in coverage,
or use cheap versions of motions, or have badly run wire loops.

Most of the time, all you have to do is open the can, and you can pretty
well tell right away whether the installer knew what he was doing or not....

  3. Their not tooooo bad. I think they're paying 200 bucks flat rate for blow & go installs now. Probably if the system's put in early in the day it's ok...crappier as the installer gets to his 6th one of the day.

They never have enough coverage though..you're right on about that.

  4. You sure made the right choice in deciding
I'd go head to head against you any time, Jimbo.

  5. Now I pick and choose......

Leave your body crevices out of this.
