Monitor hardware reset

Hi!

I bought a Dell D1025TM monitor in a site like eBay, from Brazil. All
was fine, I was happy, until something weird happened.

While I was playing, the game tried to change the game resolution in
order to work, a very commom thing. But, when the game did it, my
monitor went nuts! Almost all the front buttons dont work, only
showing a small key in the lower left corner of the screen (showing
they are locked), and the unlock option, through the menu, is not
working. This menu is all messed up, showing more than one language,
including japanese, and it´s image is all torn apart. The monitor
configuration also changed, the brightness is really low, and the
monitor assumed a "3D image" look (one of the screen modes the monitor
offers), and it looked so bad I couldnt read a line.

I searched for info in the net, and found out that this monitor is
really sensitive to resolution changes (more people had the same
problem, and even the guy that I bought it from had the same problem a
few months later). Dell was exchanging the defective ones. I tried
that, with no luck.

In order to use it again, I opened it up and changed some of the
configs from inside (like the focus, now I can read stuff), and screen
position. But I can only use one resolution, others (that dont have
saved config) are all messed up.

Well, now that you´re aware of the problem, I will ask the question:

Is there any way to do a hardware reset in a monitor?

Maybe, if I reset the monitor "firmware", the monitor "program", I can
get the controls working again.

Any help?

Thank you in advance,
Ricardo Gorgrond, Brazil.

Hi...

Know nothing about your monitor, but until and unless
someone more knowledgable offers better, wonder if it
might not reset itself if you were to just unplug
and disconnect it and leave it sit for a day or few?

Take care.

What does the RESET button do?
from: http://support.ap.dell.com/docs/monitors/55341/controls.htm)

The Reset button resets the adjustments to the factory settings. To reset
the adjustments:

1. Press and quickly release the reset button when the on-screen display
(OSD) displays for any of the control settings (brightness, contrast,
pincushion, horizontal and vertical size/centering, rotation, and color
temperature). This resets the setting currently in use for the current
video mode.
2. Press and quickly release the reset button when the OSD is not
displayed. This recalls all factory settings for the current video mode.
3. Press and hold the reset button for two seconds when no OSD is
displayed to recall all factory settings for all video modes

I tried to leave it alone for some time... I started to use another
monitor when the Dell one went nuts... but it didnt work. Thanks for
the help anyway, Ken! :)

Well, the reset button also doesn't work... when I press it, the same
little green key shows up... and I cant change anything.

But the reset button may not help me, if all he does is what is said
above... it will only reset my configs, maybe even the only one that
works now, and I will still be left with a locked monitor.

As Dell didn't want to change it, guess I will have to stick with the
defective one, until I can buy a new one... and it wont be another
D1025TM, hehehe.

If any one come up with a new idea, please leave a message!

Thank you,
Ricardo!

Hi...

I have one more if you're willing to invest a
few more minutes...

Turn the monitor on; let it warm up a little.

Then press and hold the menu button for at least
a minute or two, or if you can see anything at
all, then until you see a change on the screen.

If you see no change, then go for the full two
minutes.

Then release the menu button; wait patiently
for another couple of minutes; then turn the
monitor off.

Turn it back on, and with any luck at all it will
be unlocked for you.

If this works, then follow Stan's instructions
above to reset everything that needs resetting.

Fingers crossed; good luck! :)

Hi...

I guess I'm out of ideas then.

That last was from the wife of a long time friend,
who worked for Dell support until they were married.

She's adamant that the way to reset a locked dell
monitor is to hold the menu key until the icon
disappears. She's not too technical, used to just
read to users from a script, so she doesn't remember
all the details. But she swears that holding in the
menu button for a long time was the answer.

Maybe if you want to waste a little more time, you
could experiment with that just a bit more.

Take care.

Hey Ricardo,
funny you should run into this problem. About a month ago I installed the drivers
for a Samsung LCD (secondary monitor) on a dualhead ATI card.. as soon as I
rebooted the computer the Sony (primary screen) literally corrupted itself. It was
a Sony CPD-G100 I think (15" CRT). The green key was on the screen all the time,
and the menu was in a few languages simultaneously.

The solution: find the reset button. Press it quickly once. Wait a minute, then
press and HOLD it for about a minute.. you should notice when it recalls the
factory settings as the key will disappear and the image size will probably reset
to the default for the resolution/refresh. Turn it off, then on again and you
should be up and running. Mine was a genuine Sony, not a Dell, so your milage may
vary, but it probably has the same (or largely similar logic).

Good Luck!

Just today my Dell D1025TM monitor did the exact same thing...

I was installing Windows 2003 on a computer with that monitor, and during
the install the monitor clicked (like a normal refresh rate change) and then
the little green lock key shows up any time I press any of the buttons
now...

I have tried the same things suggested for Ricardo to no avail.

My monitor is too bright now, and it is definitely more fuzzy than it used
to be. It's stuck in some other mode now and it won't come back..

Are there any other ideas for resetting this beast?

It's 5 years old now so I suspect that is long out of warranty, plus that's
not really an option since I did not buy it from Dell anyway.

Thanks, David

Ricardo,

I just fixed mine (Dell D1025TM). I went to the menu (which was all
gibberish), selected the lower-right box (since that's the only one I could
use), hit the select/enter type button (in between the brightness/contrast
buttons). Then I think I hit the left contrast control button (just on the
right side of the enter/select button). That let me access the menus
again...

Then I held the reset button for a few seconds and the monitor flashed a few
times, then the menu was in english again.

Very strange.

I hope you can get yours to work too!

David
