Please I have read that modern ups uses modified sine wave @ high
    frequency
and its stepped up by a ferrite transformer. My worry is that most of
    these
commercial ups are marked 50/60HZ. Meaning the output is an AC with a
frequency of 50 or 60Hz. How is this achieved?

A dc to dc converter first converts bsttery voltage to around 150VDC this
is the High frequency part then the 150VDC is converted to AC through a
    switching circuit.
