MM5311 Clock Chips...>>

Looking for some MM5311 clock chips (with BCD outputs). I'm using this
for a Nixie tube clock project and this seems the simplest way to do
things without requiring a lot of unwanted chips.

Anyone know where I can get such things?

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,
Good luck finding them, I've been looking for the MM5311's for a while. You
can still get the MM5314's but you will need the 74C915 7 Segment to BCD
converter chip. Plus you will meed a 7441/74141 with either chip anyway. I
built my 1st 6 digit nixie clock with 17 TTL ic's earlier this year. You
can see the photos at http://www.tuberadios.com

You can purchase a preprogrammed PIC ic's that will need 2 7441's. If you
want more info, let me know. I have been on this nixie tube quest for a
while.

The MM5314 plus converter might work...would only add one chip to my
design. Where can the 5314s be had?

Thanks,

Tim

Very nifty, your Nixie clocks. The 1-digit bird house clock is
innovative. Never saw such before.

Your TTL clock looks a lot like my first digital clock. Lots of chips
on one side of the board and a rat's nest on the other side. ;-) There
were no 7-seg LED displays when I built my TTL clock so I used
incandescent 7-segment displays. I had some thumbwheel switches I'd
liberated while in the service and I used those to dual purposes: to set
the alarm time and to set the clock. Dial in the desired time, flip a
switch, and the clock counted until it reached the desired display.
Flip the switch back and the clock began counting from there. I was one
of very few people who thought the method was cool.

I noticed the time displayed in the pic of your Nixie clock was
"oh-one-something". Your next assignment is to implement leading zero
suppression. :)

Yikes. Just checked with Unicorn electronics
(http://unicornelectronics.com/prod.htm) and they do have the 5314 and
the 74C195, but $13 for the former and $8 for the latter. Are these
obsolete things really that expensive?

Heh! I was at Unicorn Electronics in Johnson City, NY just this
morning. I try not to avoid shopping there because everything is always
tres expensive .... but I really-really needed something.

Actually, other members of the MM53xx have BCD output (multiplexed), so you
don't need the converter. But if you want to de-multiplex and direct drive
your nixies, you'll need to latch the BCD data. This isn't actually necessary
though, as the multiplex drive can be used as-is with the only penalty being
lower maximum apparent brightness of the nixies (usually not a problem
indoors).

IC's similar to the MM5314 include MM5309, MM5311, MM5312, MM5313, and MM5315.
All of these except the MM5314 have BCD output. Each has a slightly different
feature set: MM5309 has Reset, MM5311 has Hold, MM5312 has 1pps output but
only 4-digit display, MM5313 has 1pps out and Hold, MM5314 has 7-segment
output only with Output Enable (display blanking) and Hold, MM5315 has Hold
and Reset.

Tim,
Yes, these old clock ics are getting very expensive now a days. You won't find
the MM5314 any cheaper than Unicorn electronics for $13.00.

Michael,
Thanks for checking out my clocks, actually I like a leading zero on the 10's of
hour display. It will be a easy "fix" to eliminate the leading zero if I wanted,
all I have to do is disconnect the zero cathode! Ta Da.... :)
