Check for worn belts, and to see if the idler assembly located under the
loader is working correctly. This is the very most basic, when nothing moves
properly.

Hello everyone,
I have got an old Mitsubushi vcr which is having trouble playing, ff
and rewinding tapes.
In order to do any of the above I have to try for about 10 minutes
before it works. What happens on each failed attempt is that you can
hear the mechanism firing up to play or fast forward, etc but then it
starts to strain for a couple of seconds before stopping.
Could this be a fixable problem for someone with little electronics
experience?

That is the thing. When I eventually do get the tape playing or
rewinding the thing works perfectly, it goes at it's normal speed. It
just takes several attempts for it to start. Usually it whines and
then stops dead with the tape not having moved at all.

One series of Mitsubishi vcr's in particular had a problem with bad grease
on the pinch roller cam gear - which might cause this problem. Similar to
U32's U59's, etc.
