Methane generators

I read an article back in the early 70's that said people in China had a
small methane generator for each house. (I think it was China?) They would
throw their food garbage in it and get enough methane to cook with and heat
their homes with. Also the article said factories would dam up small springs
and have dividers in them. In each divider they would have waste material
that would be in different stages of decomposition. When a section had quit
producing gas it was cleaned out and new waste material would be put in. The
whole pond was covered to collect the methane gas. So that their would be a
continuous release of methane gas to run factories. I haven't read or heard
of anything more about it since the article. Has any one found out exactly
how it was done?

well, there is scum buildup, but that is good fertilizer, so I would not
classify it as waste, but as "byproduct".
