Hi,

Anyone could teach me the following?

1. What is the advantage of using metal capacitors?

2. I also want to know the range of values of metal capacitors.

Thanks!

To make a capacitor, use two conductive parallel plates seperated by
an insulator.
For minimum loss, especially as frequency goes up, the conductors
should have as low ersistivity as practical - this translates to use of
metals, usually aluminum in practice due to the low cost.
Insulators can be vacuum, air, mylar, ceramic, glass, etc.

What do you mean by "metal capacitors" anyway?

foil capacitors will have a higher current rating, with the same
dielectric.

metal casings are used for safety (flame and explosion control)
reasons, and for mounting ruggedness.

ranges of values are best gleaned from your distributors' catalogs or
stock lists, as theoretical ranges are just that - theoretical.

For the dielectric or the plates? It makes very poor dielectric, but
quite good plates. It always helps to have a conductor for the plates.

They conduct so much better than those dumb wood ones.

Depends on how much effort you want to put into it, and what
kind of form factor you're looking for. I suppose you could
build one of multiple-Farad size, if you have a 20,000 sq. foot
warehouse.

Any Time!

No such thing as 'metal capacitors'.

Do you mean metal foil as opposed to metallised foil perhaps ?

Or do you mean capacitors in metal cans ?

Or whatever.

2. I also want to know the range of values of metal capacitors.

Answer question 1 and we may be able to help.
